05 / Evidence and open questions

Evidence, interpretation
and open questions.

This is an outside perspective. The observations inform a proposal; they cannot establish how Joby operates internally.

What the role itself asks for

Joby’s Head of TA posting connects global recruiting strategy, workforce planning, team leadership and execution across technical, manufacturing, operational and corporate functions. That breadth is the basis for a cross-functional proposal.

What the hiring research suggests

The supplied September research snapshot contains 218 distinct requisition IDs. An analyst classification assigns 116 to engineering/autonomy and 67 to manufacturing: 183 of 218, or approximately 84%.

That makes engineering and manufacturing a sensible starting point for discovery. It does not establish approved headcount, current workload, urgency or recruiter capacity. The snapshot was reconciled at row level; it is not a continuously refreshed careers feed.

What the team research changed

Public professional histories show technical sourcing, executive-search experience, recruiting operations and stated Air Operations ownership. Examples include Engineering recruiting and sourcing leadership and Air Operations/GTM recruiting and programs.

This changed the proposal toward supporting an experienced team. Profiles are self-reported; they do not establish performance, current reporting lines or available capacity.

What I would need to learn inside Joby
  • Which commitments are most exposed to a talent constraint?
  • Where does the hiring process lose time, and what has the team already tried?
  • What falls within this role’s responsibility across teams and geographies?
  • How are recruiting, training and operational readiness coordinated today?
  • What would make this appointment successful after six months?
How the example works

For 12 required ready at 80% readiness: round up 12 ÷ 0.80 to 15 starts; round up 15 ÷ 0.90 to 17 accepted offers; round up 17 ÷ 0.75 to 23 offers extended. Ten seats limit expected ready output to 10 × 0.80 = 8.

The sliders hold the operating requirement at 12 and recalculate the plan. Actual planning would need historical conversion data, qualified internal supply, assessment throughput, cohort dates and an explicit contingency policy. Operations and training retain responsibility for qualifications and release decisions.
